Life, What is life to you?

Life is a boon. It is said to be a gift. Normally, we preserve our gifts, right? Thus, we should look after this amazing gift of ours as well. Yet, we can’t do this alone. There are times we need someone who can look after us. They can be family, friends, relatives, or even our healthcare workers.

Healthcare workers have taken the oath to look after us in the times of need. Right now, they are actually what the title of this article depicts: The light (The hope of being alive) to the tunnel of darkness (poor health, especially because of Covid-19).

As Covid-19 is affecting our lives, life has become very unpredictable and full of uncertainties. We have no clue what the future holds for us. But we have the consolation that our medical staffs are there for us in our times of actual need. Let’s dedicate this article to them where we will highlight their importance and how much we need them.

Covid-19 VS Healthcare workers

The Coronavirus has hit lives in a way no one expected. Check out the below stats from Worldometer

No. of current cases – 21,871,863
No. of recovered cases – 88,763,031

This 88M figure is a massive number, and most of them have recovered under the attention of our healthcare workers. No wonder they are called ¨Covid warriors¨ as they have taken an immense risk in looking after us, whilst fighting the battle themselves and they are still on their toes making sure we are alright.

Thus, it is extremely important that we look after ourselves during these tough times.

So who are healthcare workers?

Healthcare workers are anyone you see in a clinic, hospital, health camps, etc… They have the knowledge that takes years to build and they never stop learning either.

We cannot only include the white-collar workers such as treating primary doctors, specialists, physicians, and other experienced staff.

We have the blue-collar healthcare workers who serve the public in medical facilities as well.

Some can include ward boys, wheelchair staff, lift assistants, receptionists, midwives, ambulance care staff including drivers, housekeepers, security, cleaning and laundry staff, etc…

The above-mentioned staff work in proximity with Covid patients and thus have a high chance to get the symptoms. It has been stated here that around 734 medical staff in India have lost their lives sacrificing themselves for the betterment of our country’s people. From the 734, 431 are the first people who have been in touch with Covid positive patients.

If this is not sacrifice, then what is?

For the past year, we have seen an increase in demand for healthcare workers. During the early months of the Coronavirus (March 2020 onwards), they had advised the public not to go outdoors. If people wanted any medical services, they ended up either going to hospital for emergency situations or they had the following options

    1. Using phone apps to deliver medicines to houses.

    2. Using the option of Telemedicine. This concept is where doctor calls up via audio or video call and speaks to the patient and thereby suggests medication, diagnosis or necessary actions that the patient needs to take up further.

The first option shows the increase in demand for blue-collar workers, as they have to deliver medicines. The Economic Times state here that by 2023, the online pharmacy is going to value at $2.7billion. You can see that there will be an increase in the number of workers required in the days to come.
The second option will create an increase in white-collar workers, as they will need professional assistance for advice in terms of their respective medical issues.

The decline of Covid cases in India (Hindustan) today.

The news is everywhere! How is India, being a country with 1200 people per square mile showing such a decline in their number of recent cases daily? Statistics show around 10,000 to 15,000 cases a day, being such an overpopulated country. Check out some assumptions about how this has happened.

    1. One major reason is where our Covid Warriors are doing such an amazing job by looking after us. This applies not only to India, but globally as well. However, if you are an Indian, you would know the surroundings and the environment of government and private hospitals. There are many cities areas in the country where special covid camps have set out to assist patients who cannot afford hospitals.

    2. The country has a young population compared to many others. Statista shows data for the past decade highlights only 6% population lives above 65 years of age. As the Coronavirus affects the health of the elderly, this is a reason the numbers of cases are low.

    3. Another reason is that Indians are prone to many diseases such as malaria, dengue etc… so their immunity system is quite strong. Thus, they can beat the virus without affecting their health to a certain extent.

Given the reasons above, as at today’s statistics by Worldometer, medical facilities are still caring for 151,000 patients. Comparing to the numbers before, what an achievement!

Finally! The Good News

The Indian government has started to provide the Covid-19 vaccine to healthcare workers . Until last week, over 60% (around 62 lakh doses) of healthcare workers have received their dose of vaccine.

Considering the high risk of being involved, they deserve to be chosen as a priority since they are in constant touch with patients daily and also handling in-house patients every day. This will help them to be strong and provide all the healthcare services they can without harming themselves.

Even though the good news is out, our entire population of 133 million has not yet received the vaccine. Those who are reading this article, I am happy that you are making your necessary commitments in order to reduce the number of cases per day. Yet, I urge you to continue your bit for your country, thus I would like to make a reminder of what you need to do.

    1. Affordable health insurance–Medical insurance is required, as you never know when you will need one.

    2. Please wear your mask at all times

    3. Sanitize and wash your hands frequently

    4. Maintain social distancing

    5. Stay at home as much as you can

    6. Avoid get-togethers or gatherings.

A Salute to our healthcare workers

Yes, the importance of our healthcare workers can never be expressed. Without them, not just India, the world would have been chaos. Many would figuratively call them God in human form. In 2020, we had hope that everything would be alright, but we were not sure. These medical staff, from a driver to a doctor, all have been very important to everyone at some point.

What if you had an emergency at home, but there wasn´t any doctor who could come home, and no one to drive the ambulance? Would you have survived? Think about it. Everyone in the medical field deserves a salute as all of them together make our life a much safer and risk-free environment to live in.
