The Origins of Teacher’s Day
We celebrate Teacher’s Day on the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was India’s first vice president and second President. On September 5, 1888, he was born into a poor Brahmin family in Tamil Nadu. Despite adversity, he excelled intellectually and became a respected scholar, philosopher, and recipient of the Bharat Ratna.
Dr. Radhakrishnan was India’s first Education Minister after independence. He felt that “teachers should be the best minds in the country” and that they played an important part in the country’s development. When his pupils approached him in 1962 to celebrate his birthday, he instead proposed that the Day be observed as Teacher’s Day to honour the entire teaching community. It is how the custom began.

The Importance of Teacher’s Day
Teacher’s Day honours teachers across India for their selfless dedication and commitment to moulding the future of their pupils and the country. Teachers ignite students’ enthusiasm for studying and knowledge. They impart moral ideals, ethics, creativity, and critical life skills to kids, preparing them to be responsible citizens. Successful individuals can trace their achievements to a teacher who inspires, encourages, and mentors them.
Teacher’s Day celebrates Dr. Radhakrishnan’s idea that instructors must develop their students’ courage, strength, and independence of thought and action. The Day honours teachers who carry his legacy of educating and enlightening young minds. It is an opportunity to make instructors feel appreciated and distinguished.
