Teaching is the most respected profession across the world. India has a long-standing tradition of Guru-Shishya relationship where Guru is revered more than even God or one’s parents. Teachers’ day is celebrated in India, every year on the 5th of September to commemorate the birth anniversary of our second president Dr Sarveapalli Radhakrishnan (1962-67). Dr S. RadhaKrishnan was a renowned academician and a student-friendly teacher who enjoyed immense popularity amongst his proteges. Internationally, World Teacher’s day is celebrated every year on 5th Oct. to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. UNESCO started these celebrations in 1994 to celebrate teachers and the teaching professionals. The theme for this year’s World Teachers’ Day has been declared to be, “Young Teachers: The future of the Profession.”

Origin of World Teachers’ Day

World Teacher’s Day was first observed in 1994 by UNESCO to focus on teachers and their concerns. This day is celebrated to honour UNESCO’s 1996 adoption of the Recommendations Concerning Teachers’ status to ensure the Fundamental Right of Education for all.

These recommendations were adopted in 1996. They dealt with the rights and responsibilities of teachers, their achievements, preparations, and education. These recommendations also covered the aspects of recruitment, employment, teaching, and learning conditions. These along with the Recommendation Concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel in 1997 stressed on higher education. Governments from all over the world have recognized these guidelines and taken steps to value teachers in ensuring quality equation for all.

National Teacher’s Day is observed on 5th September every year. It is considered to be an important day in the life of teachers and students. This day celebrates the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvappalli Radhakrishnan, the first vice-president and second president of India. The day is celebrated with much zeal by the students to make this event all the more memorable for teachers as well as the students. Most of the students, gather in their respective educational institutes to participate in Teacher’s Day celebrations.

National Teacher’s Day 2022: History & Significance

Every year, teacher’s day in India is celebrated on the 5th of September 1962. This day is celebrated to honour the famous mentor Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan’s birth anniversary. Some students went to Dr. Radhakrishnan and asked if they can celebrate his birthday. In return, he asked it to be called and celebrated Teacher’s Day. “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my privilege if 5 September is observed as Teachers’ Day. Thus, every year Teacher’s Day in India is celebrated on the 5th of September with full zeal and excitement.

The theme for National Teacher’s Day 2022 is शिक्षकः बढ़ते संकट के बीच भविष्य की नई कल्पना (Teachers: leading in crisis, reimagining the future). The theme explains it all yourself. The teachers play a vital role in guiding and preparing the younger generation to be equipped with the knowledge to deal with them.
