About Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar
Dr Ambedkar was born Bhimrao Ramji Sakpal on 14 April 1891 into a Dalit family in Mhow, present-day Madhya Pradesh. He lived in difficult circumstances with his father and aunt and faced caste discrimination and inequality throughout his schooling years.
However, growing up, he proved his worth and became the only untouchable to get admission at the famous Elphinstone High School in Mumbai, and later, at the University of Bombay. He went on to complete post-grad education in economics at Columbia University and the London School of Economics.
Dr Ambedkar dedicated most of his years to opposing untouchability, ostracism of the Dalits, and the orthodox teachings of Hindu religious leaders. He instituted the Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha with the view of providing education and socio-economic welfare to the backward classes.
After India gained independence, Dr Ambedkar helped to shape the legal system as the country’s first Law Minister. He was appointed the Chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee to draft India’s Constitution.
He fought to include economic and social rights for women and representation of socially backward classes in educational institutes in the Constitution.
For all his efforts toward a just and equal Indian society, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna award posthumously in 1990.

Janardan Sadashiv Ranapisay, an Ambedkarite and was the first person to publically celebrate Ambedkar birthday in Pune as equality day. Ever since then, this tradition is followed throughout the country, and India commemorates Ambedkar Jayanti as an official public holiday.
BR Ambedkar passed his Class 10th in 1907. Then, he completed B. A. honours in Political Science and economics from Elphinstone College. Then, he started Masters’s in Arts from Columbia University, New York. He got his Ph. D. in economics in 1927.
In 1916, he enrolled on the Bar Course at Gray’s Inn, alongside, did a doctoral thesis in Economics from the London School of Economics. Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar was a Master in 64 subjects and had proficiency in 11 languages.

-On 14 April 1990, BR Ambedkar was conferred with the Bharat Ratna award.
-The period from 14 April 1990 to 14 April 1991 was witnessed as the “Year of Social Justice” in the memory of B R Ambedkar.
-In 2015, the Indian government issued INR 10 and INR 125 coins, to mark the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr Ambedkar.
-A Google Doodle was published on 14 April 2015 for Ambedkar’s 124th birthday in the Baba Saheb Ambedkar.
-The United Nations commemorated Bhimrao Ambedkar Jayanti in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
-Indian Post issued stamps to pay homage to Ambedkar birthday in 1966, 1973, 1991, 2001, and 2013. He was also featured on other Indian post stamps in 2009, 2015, 2016, 2017 & 2020.
-Twitter in 2017 launched Babasaheb Ambedkar emoji as a tribute.
BR Ambedkar Jayanti – Significance
Baba Saheb Ambedkar struggled for equal rights for all the communities in India throughout his life, so Ambedkar birthday is celebrated as “Equality Day”, and the petition to declare 14 April as the “International Equality Day” goes to the United Nations.
