History

The Indian Air Force was founded in the 1920s by Indian freedom fighters and British immigrants living in India as the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Its significant goal was to serve the British Raj and contribute to British India’s defence. The Indian Air Force Act was approved in 1932 after years of agitation by Indian nationalists, resulting in the founding of the IAF on October 8 that year.

The initial IAF units had Indian pilots, RAFVR technical professionals, and newly enlisted recruits. During World War II, they were critical in halting the Japanese Air Force’s advance into Burma and providing air assistance to Allied ground forces.

Following independence, the IAF fought in the 1947 Indo-Pakistan conflict, assisting the Indian Army in halting the advance of Pakistan’s tribal militia in Jammu and Kashmir. The 1962 India-China war was the Indian Air Force’s first contact with a modern air force, which led to further modernization and expansion of India’s air strength.

The IAF also played a significant role in the 1965 and 1971 wars against Pakistan. Their daring deeds and aerial fighting abilities aided India in achieving strategic wins, most notably in paving the way for the establishment of Bangladesh following the 1971 war.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2811″ img_size=”900*700″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
